Blackmagic Design Studio Converter
The Blackmagic Design Studio Converter is the "central hub" for modern studio workflows. It is designed to pair specifically with Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro (G2) and 6K Pro models. It mimics the workflow of a traditional, expensive SMPTE fiber system but uses a single, cost-effective 10G Ethernet cable to handle everything.
By placing this converter in your rack, you can run one cable to your camera up to 100 meters (328 feet) away, carrying video, return feeds, tally, talkback, camera control, and power.
Core Functionality
-
Single Cable 10G IP Link: Uses a standard Cat6A or Cat7 Ethernet cable to provide an "IP-based" connection to the camera. This single link replaces multiple SDI, XLR, and power cables.
-
90W PoE++ Power: The converter features a heavy-duty internal power supply that sends 90 watts of power down the Ethernet cable. This powers the camera and any attached accessories (like focus/zoom demands or large monitors) so the camera operator doesn't need a local wall outlet.
-
Breakout Connectivity: Once the signal reaches the converter in your machine room, it "breaks out" into industry-standard connections:
-
12G-SDI Camera Out: For the main feed to your switcher.
-
12G-SDI Return In: To send the program feed, tally, and control back to the camera.
-
Analog Talkback: Includes a 1/4" headphone jack and an RJ45 port for integrating with 3rd-party intercom systems like ClearCom or RTS.
-
-
Internal Reference & Timecode: Features BNC inputs/outputs for Genlock and Timecode, ensuring all cameras in a multi-cam setup are perfectly synced.
Physical Interface
-
Built-in Monitoring LCD: The front panel features a 2.2-inch color screen. You can use it to monitor the live camera feed, check audio meters, or verify the Ethernet connection status and video format.
-
Front Panel Controls: Includes buttons to toggle between the camera feed and the return program, as well as a search dial for navigating menus.
-
Half-Rack Width: The unit is designed to be compact. You can fit two Studio Converters side-by-side in a single rack unit (1RU) space using the Universal Rack Shelf.

The Universal Rack Shelf (Sold Separately)
The Blackmagic Design Universal Rack Shelf is a 1RU mounting solution required to install the Studio Converter into a standard 19-inch equipment rack.
-
Modular Fit: Because the Studio Converter is "half-width," the shelf allows you to mount two units together.
-
Cross-Compatibility: You can mix and match. For example, you can mount one Studio Converter and one HyperDeck Studio HD Plus on the same shelf.
-
Blanking Plates: If you only have one unit, the shelf includes blanking plates to cover the empty space, maintaining proper airflow and a clean aesthetic.
Operational Insight (2026)
In 2026, many studios have moved toward the Blackmagic 2110 IP ecosystem. The Studio Converter is often the first step in that transition because it uses the same 10G Ethernet infrastructure.
Pro Tip: While standard Cat6 cable will work for short distances, it is highly recommended to use Shielded (S/FTP) Cat6A or Cat7 for the full 100-meter run. The shielding is necessary to prevent interference when the cable is carrying both high-bandwidth 4K video and 90W of PoE++ power simultaneously.
