Blackmagic Design Cable BNC x 3 Camera Fiber Converter
The Blackmagic Design Cable BNC x 3 Camera Fiber Converter is a specialized internal replacement or spare wiring loom designed specifically for the Blackmagic Camera Fiber Converter. This converter is the unit that attaches to the back of an URSA Mini or URSA Broadcast camera to transform it into a full SMPTE fiber studio camera.
Technical Purpose
The Camera Fiber Converter acts as a "bridge" between the camera’s standard rear inputs/outputs and the SMPTE fiber optic cable. This specific cable loom is used to facilitate the high-speed data transfer between the converter and the camera body.
-
Triple-Link Connectivity: The "BNC x 3" refers to the three high-quality, 12G-SDI rated cables that bridge the video signals.
-
Bi-Directional Signal Flow: These cables handle the primary 12G-SDI camera feed (out to the studio) and the return feeds (in from the switcher for monitoring and program return).
-
Internal Routing: Unlike external patch cables, these are designed with specific lengths and right-angle or low-profile connectors to fit perfectly within the mounting bracket that joins the converter to the camera.
Key Components
-
12G-SDI Rated: Supports high-bandwidth 4K and Ultra HD video signals at high frame rates (up to 60p).
-
Shielded Construction: The cables are heavily shielded to prevent electromagnetic interference, which is crucial when they are sitting directly next to the high-voltage power components of a SMPTE fiber system.
-
Integrated Connectors: Features high-quality BNC connectors with precision locking to ensure that even under the vibration of a handheld or shoulder-mount shoot, the signal remains "broadcast-safe."
Compatibility
This cable set is essential for:
-
Blackmagic Camera Fiber Converter: The unit mounted on the camera.
-
URSA Mini Pro (G1, G2, 12K): When configured for studio/fiber use.
-
URSA Broadcast (G1, G2): The primary use case for this cable in live sports and studio environments.
Operational Insight
In a fiber setup, the Camera Fiber Converter replaces the battery plate on the back of the URSA. This 3x BNC loom is the "nervous system" of that connection. If a camera is experiencing intermittent "Return Video" issues or if the Studio Base Station isn't seeing the camera's 4K feed, this internal cable loom is the first thing a technician will check for damage or loose connections.
Because the converter is often removed and re-attached when transitioning from fiber-mode to battery-mode, these cables can experience physical wear over several years. Having a spare 3x BNC loom in a broadcast fly-pack ensures that a single damaged connector doesn't sideline a multi-million dollar fiber production.
Installation Note: Replacing this cable requires carefully removing the side panels of the Fiber Converter bracket. Ensure all BNC connectors are fully seated and "clicked" into place before closing the housing, as a partially seated connector can cause signal "sparkles" or total data loss in 4K workflows.
