Blackmagic Design Expansion Cable for Micro Cinema Camera

The Blackmagic Design Expansion Cable is a specialized 9-connector breakout cable specifically designed for the Micro Cinema Camera (and compatible with the original Micro Studio Camera 4K). It utilizes a high-density DB-HD15 connector (similar in shape to a VGA plug) to unlock the camera’s remote control, power, and monitoring capabilities that are physically impossible to fit on its tiny chassis.

Breakout Connectivity

The cable expands the single port on the camera into nine distinct connections, each serving a specific production purpose:

  • 12V DC Power Input: A standard coax barrel jack that allows you to power the camera from an external power supply or a larger battery (like a V-Mount or Gold Mount) instead of the internal LP-E6 battery. It supports a wide voltage range (typically 12V to 30V).

  • LANC Port: A 2.5mm jack for industry-standard LANC remote controllers. This allows for remote Start/Stop, Iris, and Focus control from a tripod handle or gimbal grip.

  • Composite Video Output: A single BNC connector that provides an NTSC/PAL SD video feed. This is primarily used for connecting to low-cost wireless video transmitters used in the drone (FPV) community to monitor framing without the latency or weight of HDMI.

  • Reference Input (Genlock): Allows the camera to be synced with other cameras or a master clock, which is essential for multi-cam studio setups or 3D stereoscopic rigs.

  • B4 Lens Control: Provides the connection required to power and control the iris on professional B4 broadcast lenses (requires a separate B4 adapter).

Specialized RC (Radio Control) Inputs

The unique "hero" feature of this cable is its support for PWM and S.Bus signals, which allows the camera to be controlled by standard hobbyist radio-controlled (RC) transmitters used for drones and RC planes.

  • 4 x PWM Analog Inputs: These Futaba J-style connectors allow you to map camera functions (like Focus, Iris, or Audio levels) to the knobs and switches on an RC remote.

  • 1 x S.Bus Digital Input: A single high-speed digital connection that can carry up to 18 channels of control data. This is far more efficient for complex drone gimbals, as one cable can control almost every internal camera setting.

Technical Design

  • DB-HD15 Connector: The main connector features locking thumbscrews to ensure the cable doesn't vibrate loose—critical for mounting on drones or vehicle rigs.

  • Flexible Breakout: The cables are typically color-coded or labeled to help identify the various inputs and outputs in a cluttered rigging environment.

  • DIY Friendly: Because it uses a standard DB-HD15 pinout, advanced users often use this cable as a template to build their own custom, ultra-lightweight wiring looms for specific drone or "crash-cam" applications.

Operational Insight

The Expansion Cable is what truly makes the "Micro" line professional. Without it, the camera is limited to internal battery power and manual control via the small buttons on the front. With the cable, the Micro Cinema Camera becomes a fully remote-controllable cinema rig. It is particularly popular in the FPV drone community because it allows pilots to change camera settings mid-flight via their radio controller while viewing a low-latency composite "downlink" of the shot.

Note: This cable is not compatible with the newer Micro Studio Camera 4K G2, which replaced the DB-HD15 expansion port with a USB-C port for external recording and control. Ensure you are using this cable only with the original "Micro" series cameras (Micro Cinema or Micro Studio 4K).
