Blackmagic PYXIS Monitor

The Blackmagic PYXIS Monitor is a high-brightness, 5-inch HDR touchscreen designed to provide both professional monitoring and full hardware control for the Blackmagic PYXIS 6K and URSA Cine cameras. It functions as a secondary interface, allowing operators to adjust critical camera settings and view a high-fidelity image via a single-cable connection.

Integrated Control and Monitoring

The monitor serves as a direct extension of the camera's operating system, providing a seamless tactile experience.

  • Full Camera Access: Unlike standard SDI monitors, the PYXIS Monitor allows users to change ISO, white balance, shutter angle, and frame rates directly via the touchscreen menus.

  • Customizable Function Buttons: Features three physical buttons on the rear that can be assigned to common tools such as focus peaking, false color, zebra, or frame guides.

  • Metadata and Overlays: Displays real-time status indicators including timecode, histogram, audio meters, and recording status.

High-Performance Display

Engineered for use in a variety of lighting conditions, the panel is built to cinema-standard specifications.

  • 1500 Nit Brightness: The high-intensity backlight ensures the screen is daylight-viewable, even in harsh outdoor environments.

  • 10-bit HDR Panel: Supports a wide color gamut and high dynamic range, allowing for accurate monitoring of the sensor's full exposure range.

  • 1920 x 1080 Resolution: Provides a native 1080p display, ensuring that fine details are visible for critical focus pulling.

Connectivity and Intelligence

The monitor utilizes a modern digital interface to reduce cable clutter and improve reliability.

  • Single USB-C Connection: A specialized high-bandwidth USB-C cable carries the video signal, power, and bidirectional control data. This eliminates the need for separate D-Tap power or SDI cables.

  • Locking Connectors: The ports are designed to work with dual-screw locking USB-C cables, preventing accidental disconnections in high-motion environments.

  • Auto-Rotation: An internal accelerometer automatically detects the monitor's orientation and flips the image and user interface so it is always right-side up.

Physical Design

  • Large Rear Tally: Includes a prominent tally light that illuminates red during recording, making it easy for talent and crew to see the camera status.

  • Versatile Mounting: Features multiple 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 mounting points on the top and bottom for easy integration into various rigs and cages.

  • Machined Metal Body: Constructed from high-strength aluminum for durability and heat dissipation.

Operational Insight

The PYXIS Monitor is the primary solution for rigging "box" cameras where space is at a premium. By offloading the power and control to the USB-C bus, the monitor simplifies the camera build significantly. It is particularly effective for gimbal operators who need a lightweight screen that still provides full control over the camera's internal parameters without having to reach for the camera body.
