Blackmagic Design ATEM Constellation 8K
The Blackmagic Design ATEM Constellation 8K is the flagship powerhouse of the Blackmagic switcher lineup. It is a massive 4 M/E live production switcher that operates natively in Ultra HD, but can be switched into 8K mode to become one of the few high-performance 8K switchers on the market.
Housed in a 2RU chassis, it is designed for the most demanding broadcast environments, such as massive stadiums, international music festivals, and high-end network television.
Core Functionality & Versatility
This switcher is essentially a "chameleon." Its capabilities change based on the resolution you are working in:
-
Ultra HD/HD Mode: Provides 40 independent 12G-SDI inputs, 24 12G-SDI outputs, and 4 Mix/Effects (M/E) banks.
-
8K Mode: Using "Quad Link" 12G-SDI, it transforms into a 10-input 8K switcher with 6 8K outputs and 1 massive 8K M/E bank.
Key Features
-
Standards Conversion on Every Input: Every one of the 40 inputs features its own dedicated standards converter. You can plug in any combination of sources (720p, 1080p, Ultra HD, or 8K) and the switcher will instantly convert them to your project’s global standard.
-
24 Custom 12G-SDI Outputs: Unlike smaller switchers with limited Aux ports, every one of the 24 outputs can be independently routed. This allows you to send custom feeds, clean feeds, and program returns to dozens of different screens or recorders.
-
4 Independent Multiviews: Supports up to 4 separate multiview outputs. In 8K mode, these combine to create a single, massive full-resolution 8K multiview.
-
Advanced Audio Engine: Features a massive internal Fairlight audio mixer with 156 channels. It supports MADI input/output for an additional 64 channels of digital audio.
Processing Power
-
16 Upstream Keyers: Includes 16 ATEM Advanced Chroma Keyers (4 per M/E bank), allowing for incredibly complex virtual sets and multi-layered compositions.
-
4 Downstream Keyers: Dedicated keys for logos, bugs, and lower-thirds that stay consistent regardless of M/E transitions.
-
2 Independent Ultra HD DVEs: Allows for complex "picture-in-picture" effects and 3D transitions. In 8K mode, these combine to provide a single 8K DVE.
-
SuperSource: Features two independent SuperSource processors, allowing you to create multi-box layouts (like a 4-person interview) without using up your standard DVEs.

Operational Insight
In 2026, the Constellation 8K is often paired with the ATEM 4 M/E Advanced Panel 40. Because the switcher is entirely "blind" (it has no physical buttons on the front other than a small status LCD), it is designed to be tucked away in a machine room while being controlled over a high-speed network.
The redundant power supplies are non-negotiable for the scale of events this switcher handles. If one power supply fails, the second takes over instantly without a flicker in the video feed.
Note on 8K: To use 8K mode, you must connect cameras via four 12G-SDI cables per camera (Quad Link). While this reduces your input count to 10, the resulting image quality is the pinnacle of modern broadcast technology.
