Blackmagic Design Studio Fiber Converter

The Blackmagic Design Studio Fiber Converter is the "control room" end of the SMPTE fiber system. It is designed to pair with the Blackmagic Camera Fiber Converter (attached to an URSA Broadcast or URSA Mini) to provide a high-end broadcast workflow over distances up to 2 km (1.24 miles).

While the newer Studio Converter (10G Ethernet) is common for Studio Camera 4K/6K setups, the Studio Fiber Converter remains the industry standard for traditional SMPTE 304 hybrid fiber infrastructures.

Core Functionality

  • SMPTE Hybrid Fiber Link: Connects to the camera via a single SMPTE 304 connector. This cable contains both optical fiber for data and copper pins for power, allowing the converter to send an industry-standard 200V of power to the camera and all its accessories.

  • 12G-SDI & Return Feeds:

    • Camera Feed: Receives one 12G-SDI Ultra HD feed from the camera (up to 2160p60).

    • Return Feeds: Sends three independent HD return feeds back to the camera. These are typically used for Program, Teleprompter, and a secondary "talent" monitor.

  • IP Video Internal Processing: Internally, the unit converts all signals to a high-speed, low-latency 10G IP link. This "future-proofs" the hardware, allowing it to act as an IP video node.

  • Integrated 5" LCD Viewfinder: The front panel features a large, bright display for monitoring the camera feed, return feeds, and checking diagnostic information like fiber link strength and power status.

Communication & Control

  • Dual-Channel Talkback: Supports two separate channels of talkback (Production and Engineering). It can be integrated into 3rd-party analog systems via a 25-pin connector or use embedded SDI audio.

  • Camera & Lens Control: Full remote "painting" and lens control (Iris/Focus/Zoom) are passed through the fiber link when using an ATEM switcher.

  • PTZ & Tracker Support: Includes a dedicated 9-pin D-sub port for PTZ head control via the Visca protocol and tracker talkback.

Technical Specifications

Feature Specification
Fiber Connector SMPTE 304 (Female)
SDI Outputs 2 x 12G-SDI (Camera Feed)
SDI Inputs 3 x 12G-SDI (Return Feeds)
Audio 4 x Balanced XLR Analog Outputs (from camera)
Intercom 1 x 25-pin D-sub (Supports Production/Engineering)
Resolution Up to 2160p60 (Ultra HD)
Dimensions 2RU Half-Rack width

Operational Insight (2026)

In 2026, the Studio Fiber Converter is the backbone of high-end sports and concert rigs. Its ability to provide fail-safe power is its biggest advantage; the converter performs a safety check before sending high voltage down the line. If a cable is cut or damaged, the power is instantly cut to prevent injury.

Hardware Pairing: This unit is almost always mounted in the Studio Fiber Rack Kit, which allows you to put two of these converters side-by-side in a single 2RU rack space.
