The Blackmagic Design SmartView 4K G3 is a professional 15.6-inch broadcast monitor designed for high-end rack monitoring. It is the first Ultra HD monitor in the lineup to feature native SMPTE ST 2110 IP connectivity alongside traditional 12G-SDI, bridging the gap between SDI-based facilities and modern IP-based broadcast infrastructures.

Core Functionality

  • Native 4K Display: Features a 3840 x 2160 active-matrix TFT LCD that provides a "pixel-for-pixel" view of Ultra HD sources up to 2160p60, ensuring critical focus and image detail evaluation.

  • Dual-Path Monitoring: Equipped with both 12G-SDI and 10G Ethernet (IP) inputs. You can switch between traditional SDI video and 2110 IP video streams at the push of a button.

  • Broadcast Tools: Includes professional overlays such as focus peaking, zoom, aspect ratio markers (including social media guides), and safe area indicators.

Technical Features

  • SMPTE 2110 Integration: Features both copper (RJ45) and optical (SFP) connections for IP video. It supports uncompressed video (ST 2110-20), audio (ST 2110-30), and ancillary data (ST 2110-40), as well as NMOS for virtual routing.

  • 12G-SDI Loop Through: Any signal coming in via 12G-SDI or the 2110 IP network can be routed back out through the 12G-SDI loop output, allowing the monitor to act as a converter in a signal chain.

  • 3D LUT Support: Includes internal 3D LUTs for monitoring "log" gamma or HDR profiles. You can upload custom LUTs via the SmartView utility to see creative looks on set.

  • Lightweight Aluminum Design: The 6RU chassis is made of machined aluminum. It is only a few inches deep, which improves rack ventilation by allowing natural convection behind the monitor.

Operational Insight

The G3 is specifically designed for the transition to IP. Because it supports the Blackmagic IP10 codec and standard ST 2110 uncompressed video, it is equally at home in a traditional SDI fly-pack or a high-end 2110 IP control room. The front panel buttons are ergonomically tilted, making it easier to operate when the monitor is mounted at the top of a rack, which is a common placement in broadcast trucks and equipment rooms.
