Blackmagic Design Teranex AV

The Blackmagic Design Teranex AV is a specialized standards converter designed specifically for the live events and professional AV industry. While the "Express" model is tailored for broadcast, the AV model adds low-latency processing, HDMI 2.0 connectivity, and professional audio inputs, making it the "Swiss Army Knife" for stadium screens, concerts, and corporate presentations.

The "AV" Specific Features

  • Low Latency Mode: Provides real-time processing with latency as low as 67 milliseconds (approx. 2 frames). This is critical for live IMAG (Image Magnification) where the video on the big screen must match the live performer perfectly.

  • Internal Still Store: Allows you to capture a video frame and store it in non-volatile memory. You can "black out" to a corporate logo or sponsor graphic instantly between presenters, even if the source is disconnected.

  • Live Freeze Frame: Enables you to temporarily freeze the current output while you switch sources or adjust settings in the background, ensuring the audience never sees a "glitch" or a black screen.

  • Integrated HDMI 2.0a: Includes HDMI input, loop-through, and output. This allows you to convert HDMI sources (like laptops or consumer cameras) to SDI without external adapters.

Standards Conversion Power

  • 1,089 Conversions: Performs high-quality up, down, and cross-conversions between virtually all SD, HD, and Ultra HD standards up to 2160p60.

  • Optical Resizing: Uses patented Teranex algorithms to simulate the look of an optical zoom, preventing the "digital look" often associated with scaling.

  • Pixel Motion Analysis: Analyzes pixels between frames to calculate new data for frame rate conversions, resulting in smooth, professional-grade motion.

Technical Features

  • 12G-SDI & Quad-Link SDI: Features 12G-SDI for modern single-cable 4K workflows, but also includes Quad-Link 3G-SDI outputs. This allows you to drive older 4K projectors or split a 4K signal into four HD feeds for a 2x2 video wall.

  • Professional Audio I/O: Includes XLR connections for 4 channels of AES/EBU or 2 channels of balanced analog audio, plus consumer RCA (HiFi) inputs for laptops or media players.

  • Optical Fiber SFP Socket: Features a blank cage for an optional SMPTE-compatible SFP Optical Module. This allows you to send and receive video over miles of fiber optic cable, though the module itself must be purchased separately.

Technical Specifications

Feature Specification

Max Resolution 3840 x 2160 (Ultra HD) @ 60fps
Audio Inputs 2 x XLR (Analog/AES), 2 x RCA (L/R HiFi)
Reference I/O BNC In & Out (Tri-Sync / Black Burst)
Control Ethernet (RJ45) or Front Panel Buttons
Power 100-240V AC Internal (Standard IEC)
Form Factor 1RU (Full Rack Width)

Operational Insight

The Teranex AV is often placed at the "end of the line" in a signal chain. If a presenter walks on stage with a laptop running at an odd resolution or refresh rate, the Teranex AV can "clean" that signal instantly to the house standard (e.g., 1080i59.94) before it hits the production switcher. The rear brackets are a small but vital design touch; they protect your BNC and HDMI cables from being snapped off if the rack is bumped or moved during a high-pressure live load-in.

Would you like to know which SFP modules (3G, 6G, or 12G) are most compatible with your specific cable run distance?

 Excluding SFP Optical Module.
