Blackmagic Design Ultimatte 12 4K
The Blackmagic Design Ultimatte 12 4K is a real-time hardware compositing processor designed for broadcast-quality keying in Ultra HD environments. Unlike standard chroma keyers built into production switchers, the Ultimatte is a dedicated "blue and green screen specialist" that uses advanced image processing to handle difficult elements like transparent objects, shadows, and fine hair.
Core Functionality
-
Advanced Color Science: Ultimatte 12 4K treats the image as a series of layers rather than a flat video feed. It uses a massive internal color space to separate the foreground from the background, which prevents "color spill" (green or blue light reflecting onto the talent's skin).
-
One-Touch Keying: The "File Clear" button automatically analyzes the scene and sets over 100 internal parameters. This allows for a perfect key in seconds, even if the green screen is unevenly lit.
-
Realistic Compositing: It features a specialized "Realistic" layer mode that can accurately composite translucent objects. For example, if a person is holding a glass of water, the Ultimatte can preserve the refraction and the way light passes through the glass onto the virtual background.
Key Technical Features
-
12G-SDI Connectivity: Supports high-frame-rate Ultra HD via a single BNC cable. It is fully compatible with SD, HD, and 4K standards up to 2160p60.
-
Internal Frame Stores: The 4K model includes internal memory to store background and layer stills. This means you don't need a separate media player or computer to provide the virtual background image.
-
Sub-Pixel Processing: It processes the edges of the matte at a sub-pixel level, resulting in incredibly smooth transitions that eliminate the "jagged" look often seen in lower-end keyers.
-
Multiple Matte Inputs: Includes dedicated SDI inputs for:
-
Foreground: The talent on the green screen.
-
Background: The virtual set or plate.
-
Garbage Matte: To mask out studio lights or rigs.
-
Holdout Matte: To define areas that should never be keyed.
-
Layer: For placing AR elements in front of the talent.

Operational Insight
The Ultimatte 12 4K is the "workhorse" of the range, balancing high resolution with a compact 1RU form factor. It is most commonly used in newsrooms and weather segments where the talent stands in a virtual environment.
Because it provides a dedicated Talent Monitor output, the person on camera can see themselves composited against the virtual background on a studio floor monitor in real-time, helping them interact with virtual objects more naturally. While it can be controlled via a computer, it is highly recommended to use the Ultimatte Smart Remote 4 for tactile control over edge softness and shadow density during live broadcasts.
