Blackmagic Design Micro Converter BiDirectional SDI/HDMI 12G (No PSU)
The Blackmagic Design Micro Converter BiDirectional SDI/HDMI 12G (No PSU) is the high-performance 12G version of the world's most versatile pocket converter. This "No PSU" version is identical to the full bundle but excludes the AC adapter, making it the preferred choice for professionals who already have established USB-C power setups in their racks or camera rigs.
It allows you to convert SDI to HDMI and HDMI to SDI simultaneously, even in completely different video standards for each direction.
Key Features & Capabilities
-
Simultaneous BiDirectional Conversion: You can send a 4K HDMI camera signal to a switcher via SDI while simultaneously receiving a return SDI program feed and converting it to an HDMI monitor. Each direction is independent.
-
Full 12G-SDI Support: Handles everything from SD and HD up to Ultra HD 2160p60 and 4K DCI 60p. It supports all professional SDI rates (270Mb, 1.5G, 3G, 6G, and 12G).
-
33-Point 3D LUT Support: This 12G model includes an internal 3D LUT engine. You can load custom LUTs via the USB utility to color-calibrate a consumer monitor or to apply a specific "film look" to your on-set monitoring.
-
Camera Control & Tally: When used with an ATEM SDI switcher and a Blackmagic HDMI camera (like a Pocket Cinema Camera), it translates the SDI control protocol into HDMI CEC. This gives you remote control over the camera’s iris, focus, and color grading plus live tally.

Powering Without a PSU
Since this model does not include a wall adapter, you must provide 5V power via the USB-C port. Common 2026 workflows include:
-
USB-C Rack Rails: Powering 10+ units from a single high-amperage USB-C rack power supply to save space.
-
Monitor Power: Plugging the converter into the USB "service" port on the back of a TV or professional monitor.
-
Camera Rigs: Running the converter off a V-mount battery's USB-A or USB-C output.
-
Laptops: Powering the unit directly from a MacBook or PC while using the software utility to manage LUTs.
Operational Insight
In 2026, the BiDirectional 12G is widely considered the "ultimate field converter." Because it can handle 4K 60p and also functions as a LUT box, it has replaced many single-direction converters in broadcast kits.
Pro Tip: The unit features SDI Re-clocking. Even at high 12G speeds, it regenerates the signal to reduce jitter. This is critical if you are converting an HDMI source at a camera and then running a long SDI cable (up to 70 meters / 230 feet) back to a switcher.
Does not include Power Supply Unit (PSU).
