Blackmagic Design Videohub 80x80 12G

The Blackmagic Design Videohub 80x80 12G is a massive, high-density zero-latency video router designed for large-scale broadcast facilities and live production hubs. Occupying 4RU of rack space, it allows any of its 80 inputs to be routed to any of its 80 outputs, supporting a mix of SD, HD, and Ultra HD formats up to 2160p60 simultaneously.

Core Functionality

  • Massive I/O Density: With 80 x 12G-SDI inputs and 80 x 12G-SDI outputs, it centralizes all SDI cabling into a single hub, eliminating the need for complex patch bays or manual re-cabling.

  • Zero-Latency Routing: Unlike IP-based systems that may introduce processing delay, this hardware crosspoint router provides instantaneous switching for mission-critical live broadcast.

  • Visual Routing: The built-in 5-inch LCD displays live video of the sources before you "take" the switch. You can see the video standard and custom labels directly on the front panel.

Technical Features

  • Advanced 12G-SDI: The multi-rate connections auto-detect and switch between SD, HD, 3G, 6G, and 12G-SDI. It supports 4:2:2 10-bit and 4:4:4 12-bit color precision for high-end cinema workflows.

  • SDI Re-clocking: Every input features built-in re-clocking to regenerate the SDI signal. This is vital for long cable runs, as it reduces jitter and prevents signal dropouts before the video reaches its destination.

  • Redundant Power: Includes dual 100-240V AC power inputs for mission-critical reliability. If one power source or cable fails, the router continues to operate without interruption.

  • Flexible Control: * Front Panel: Machined metal spin knob and direct-entry buttons.

    • Remote Hardware: Compatible with Videohub Master Control Pro and Smart Control Pro panels over Ethernet.

    • Software: Controlled via Mac, Windows, or iPad using the Videohub Software Control.

Technical Specifications

Feature Specification
SDI Inputs 80 x 12G-SDI (BNC)
SDI Outputs 80 x 12G-SDI (BNC)
Max Resolution 2160p60 (Ultra HD / 4K DCI)
Reference I/O Tri-Sync or Black Burst (Input & Loop Output)
Control Interfaces RJ45 Ethernet, USB-C (Setup/Updates), RS-422
Audio Support 32 channels of embedded audio per connection
Power Consumption ~92 Watts max
Form Factor 4RU (Full Rack Width)

Operational Insight

The Videohub 80x80 12G is often the "spinal cord" of a modern broadcast truck or facility. Because every BNC connector on the back has an integrated LED signal indicator, engineers can visually verify a live signal at the back of the rack without checking a monitor.

Its ability to handle uncompressed 4K signals at 60fps makes it future-proof for high-frame-rate sports and live events. In a multi-camera studio, it allows any monitor, multiviewer, or recorder to access any camera or playback deck instantly, while the SDK support allows it to be integrated into third-party automation systems.
