Blackmagic Design 2110 IP Mini BiDirect 12G SFP
The Blackmagic Design 2110 IP Mini BiDirect 12G SFP is a compact, camera-mountable converter designed to bridge traditional 12G-SDI broadcast cameras with modern SMPTE ST 2110 IP video systems. Released in 2024, this "SFP" version is distinguished by its flexibility in using optical fiber or copper modules for long-distance connectivity.
Core Functionality
This device acts as a bi-directional gateway for a single camera position:
-
Simultaneous In/Out: It simultaneously converts a camera's 12G-SDI output into an IP stream while converting an incoming IP "Program Return" stream back into 12G-SDI for the camera’s viewfinder or monitoring.
-
Camera Control & Tally: It supports full bi-directional communication, meaning the converter passes tally signals and camera control data between the control room and the camera over the IP network.
-
Integrated Talkback: Features a professional 5-pin XLR headset connection. This allows the camera operator to communicate with the director using the talkback channels (15/16) embedded in the SDI/IP stream.
Key Technical Features
-
10G SFP Slot: Unlike the standard "RJ45" model, this unit features an open SFP socket. You can populate it with a 10G Ethernet optical module for fiber runs spanning kilometers, or a 10G copper module for shorter Cat6A runs.
-
12G-SDI Support: Handles all video standards from SD and HD up to Ultra HD 2160p60.
-
PTP Synchronization: Uses Precision Time Protocol (IEEE 1588-2008) to ensure that all video sources on the IP network are perfectly genlocked and synchronized.
-
NMOS Protocol: Fully supports IS-04 (Discovery) and IS-05 (Connection Management), allowing it to appear as a "virtual router port" in broadcast control software.
-
Blackmagic IP10 Codec: When converting 12G-SDI to 10G IP, it uses the low-latency, visually lossless IP10 codec to maintain broadcast-grade image quality.

Operational Insight: The "Fiber" Advantage
The SFP version is the preferred choice for large-scale stadium or campus environments. While the standard RJ45 model is limited to the ~100m distance of copper Ethernet, the SFP model allows you to drop a camera essentially anywhere you can run a fiber line.
Because it is so small, it can be strapped directly to a camera battery plate or rig. This effectively turns any traditional SDI camera—even a non-Blackmagic one—into a fully-fledged "IP Camera" capable of studio talkback, return video, and remote control over a single thin strand of glass.
Note on Modules: This unit typically does not include the SFP module in the box. You will need to purchase a compatible 10G SFP transceiver (such as Blackmagic’s own 10G SFP Optical Module) separately to match your facility's fiber type (Single Mode or Multi Mode).
Are you planning to mount this on a specific camera, or is this for a fixed position in a studio rack?
