Blackmagic Design 2110 IP SDI to HDMI 12G

The Blackmagic Design 2110 IP SDI to HDMI 12G is a professional broadcast converter designed to integrate traditional SDI and HDMI equipment into modern SMPTE 2110 IP video networks. This device acts as a "bridge," allowing you to monitor uncompressed IP video feeds on standard HDMI displays or connect legacy SDI hardware to an IP-based infrastructure.

Key Features and Functionality

  • Bi-Directional Conversion: While primarily used to convert IP to HDMI, it also features a 12G-SDI input. This allows you to monitor an IP source while simultaneously sending a local SDI camera or deck feed back into the IP network.

  • 12G-SDI & HDMI 2.0: Supports all video standards from SD and HD up to Ultra HD 2160p60 over a single connection.

  • Zero Latency: Built with dedicated hardware processing to ensure the conversion happens instantaneously, which is critical for live broadcast monitoring where sync is paramount.

  • NMOS Support: Fully compliant with IS-04 and IS-05, allowing the converter to be discovered and managed by IP routing software just like a traditional hardware router.

Connectivity and Power

  • 10G Ethernet (RJ45): Unlike many IP converters that require expensive SFP fiber modules, this unit uses a standard Copper 10G Ethernet port. You can use common Cat6A cabling to handle uncompressed Ultra HD video.

  • LCD Status Display: The front panel features a built-in color LCD that provides a "confidence monitor" of the video feed, along with real-time data on IP addresses, audio levels, and PTP (Precision Time Protocol) sync status.

  • PoE+ (Power over Ethernet): The unit can be powered via a standard AC (IEC) cable or directly from a network switch via PoE+. This reduces cable clutter in rack-mounted or ceiling-mounted monitoring setups.

Why Use SMPTE 2110?

In a traditional studio, every signal requires a dedicated SDI cable. In a 2110 IP environment, all video, audio, and data travel over a single high-speed network. This converter allows you to:

  1. Monitor Anywhere: Place a standard 4K TV in a green room or office and feed it any signal from your entire studio network using one Ethernet cable.

  2. Save on Cabling: Route dozens of 4K feeds through a single network switch rather than thousands of feet of heavy coax cable.

  3. Standardize Monitoring: Use the HDMI output for low-cost consumer displays while using the 12G-SDI output for professional grade-1 broadcast monitors.

Technical Specifications

Feature Specification
IP Standards SMPTE 2110-20 (Video), -30 (Audio), -40 (Data)
Network Port 1 x 10G Ethernet (RJ45)
Video Outputs 1 x 12G-SDI, 1 x HDMI 2.0
Video Inputs 1 x 12G-SDI
Max Resolution 2160p60
Sync PTP v2 (IEEE 1588)

Professional Tip: When deploying this unit, ensure your network switch supports IGMP Snooping. Since SMPTE 2110 relies on multicast traffic, a properly configured switch ensures the high-bandwidth video data is only sent to the converter's port, preventing the rest of your network from slowing down.
