Blackmagic Design ATEM Camera Converter
The Blackmagic Design ATEM Camera Converter is a portable, battery-powered interface that allows you to extend any SDI or HDMI camera over massive distances using low-cost optical fiber. Designed for live sports, concerts, and large venues, it acts as the "field unit" that connects to a central ATEM Studio Converter or Talkback Converter.
Core Functionality
-
Single Fiber Connection: Transmits 10-bit SD/HD video, audio, tally, and talkback over a single-mode optical fiber cable (LC connectors) up to 28 miles (45 km).
-
Bi-Directional Conversion:
-
Outbound: Converts your camera’s SDI or HDMI signal to optical fiber to send to the switcher.
-
Inbound: Receives the "Program Return" from the switcher and converts it back to SDI/HDMI for a local monitor, allowing the operator to see the final show.
-
-
Integrated Talkback: Uses channels 15 and 16 of the SDI signal for communication. Operators can plug in standard PC headsets or iPhone-style earbuds to talk to the director.
-
Built-in Tally: Features two large tally LEDs that illuminate when the camera is "live" on the switcher’s program bus.
Key Technical Features
-
Battery Power: Includes an internal rechargeable battery with approximately 2–3 hours of life, making it ideal for roaming cameras where mains power is unavailable. It also accepts 12V–31V DC for constant power and charging.
-
Dual Audio Inputs: Features two balanced 1/4" TRS inputs for external microphones. When used, these replace the audio from the camera's SDI/HDMI feed, allowing for professional field audio capture.
-
Machined Aluminum Design: The chassis is incredibly robust and includes an integrated belt clip, allowing it to be worn by the operator or clamped directly to a tripod leg.
-
Rubberized Controls: A side button strip allows for quick adjustments to volume, mic levels, and camera number assignment.

Operational Insight
The ATEM Camera Converter is a legendary "problem solver" in the Blackmagic ecosystem. While modern Blackmagic Studio Cameras have fiber ports built-in, this converter allows you to bring any camera (such as a DSLR, mirrorless, or legacy ENG camera) into a professional fiber-based talkback and tally workflow.
Expert Note on Intercoms: The talkback system is designed for standard computer-style headsets. If you are working in an extremely loud environment (like a music festival), the internal amplifier may struggle to drive high-impedance broadcast headsets. In those cases, many engineers use a specialized adapter or the newer ATEM Studio Converter 2 which has more robust audio driving capabilities.
