Blackmagic Design ATEM Studio Converter 2

The Blackmagic Design ATEM Studio Converter 2 is a 1RU rack-mount hub that bridges the gap between four remote cameras and a production switcher. It is specifically designed to work with the ATEM Camera Converter, allowing you to send video, audio, tally, and talkback over long distances using low-cost optical fiber.

While the original model utilized external power bricks and a simpler design, Version 2 introduced a more robust integrated power supply and a professional machined metal front panel with expanded physical controls.

Core Functionality

  • 4-Camera Hub: Supports bi-directional conversion for up to four cameras simultaneously. It converts the optical fiber feed from the cameras into SDI for the switcher while sending the Program return feed (with talkback and tally) back to the cameras.

  • Extreme Distance: Uses standard single-mode optical fiber with LC connectors, supporting cable runs up to 28 miles (45 km). This far exceeds the ~300ft limit of standard copper SDI cables.

  • Integrated Talkback: Uses SDI channels 15 and 16 for communication. The director can speak to camera operators individually or globally using the front-panel controls.

  • 10-Bit Precision: Features high-quality 10-bit processing, ensuring that the signal remains "broadcast clean" during the conversion from optical to SDI.

Key Improvements in Version 2

  • 6G-SDI Support: Unlike the original version, the Studio Converter 2 was designed with 6G-SDI technology, allowing for Ultra HD support (though it remains primarily a workhorse for SD and HD workflows).

  • Built-in Power Supply: Eliminates the external "power brick" in favor of a standard internal IEC 110-240V AC power supply.

  • Front Panel Speaker & Mic: Adds a built-in speaker and an XLR microphone input on the front panel. This allows the director to manage talkback without being tethered to a headset.

  • Redundant Power: Includes a 12V–31V DC input on the rear for an optional battery or secondary power source in mission-critical environments.

Technical Specifications

Feature Specification
I/O Capacity 4 x Camera Channels (Optical LC)
SDI Video Output 4 x 10-bit SD/HD/6G-SDI switchable
Program Input 1 x SDI (includes Tally & Talkback embedding)
Analog Audio Out 4 x XLR pairs (De-embedded audio for each camera)
Talkback Ports 1/4" Headphone, .206" Aviation Mic, 3-pin XLR (Front)
Network/Setup Mini-B USB 2.0 (for initial IP and firmware)
Form Factor 1RU (Full Rack Width)

Operational Insight

The ATEM Studio Converter 2 is most commonly found in church venues, stadiums, and large-scale corporate halls. It effectively acts as an "SDI-to-Fiber" patch bay.

One of its most useful features is the balanced XLR audio outputs on the rear. Since the fiber line carries the camera's audio, you can peel those feeds off at the Studio Converter and send them directly into a professional audio mixing console for a separate live mix, rather than relying only on the audio embedded in the SDI feed.

System Tip: If you need to support more than four cameras, these units are designed to be cascaded. You can loop the Program SDI output from the first unit into the Program input of the second, extending your talkback and tally chain to 8, 12, or 16 cameras.

How would you like to see this integrated with the ATEM Camera Converter or the modern Studio Camera 4K/6K lineup?
