Blackmagic Design DeckLink 8K Pro G2

The Blackmagic Design DeckLink 8K Pro G2 is a high-performance PCIe capture and playback card designed for advanced feature film and broadcast workflows. As the "G2" (Generation 2) successor to the standard DeckLink 8K Pro, it introduces upgraded connectivity, specifically adding HDMI 2.1 capabilities to its already powerful 12G-SDI infrastructure.

8K Connectivity and Standards

The card is built to handle the highest resolution standards currently used in professional production, offering total flexibility between SDI and HDMI workflows.

  • Quad-Link 12G-SDI: Features four bidirectional 12G-SDI connectors. These can be used for independent capture/playback of four different signals (up to 4K60) or combined as a single Quad-Link connection for 8K video.

  • HDMI 2.1 Integration: Includes a specialized mezzanine card that provides high-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 input and output. This allows for direct connection to 8K televisions and high-end consumer monitors without needing external converters.

  • Format Support: Supports all video standards from SD and HD up to Ultra HD, 4K, 8K, and 8K DCI. It can handle high frame rates up to 120 fps in 4K and 60 fps in 8K.

Professional Color and Audio

Designed for colorists and finishing artists, the G2 ensures maximum signal integrity for high-end mastering.

  • 12-bit RGB 4:4:4: Provides full support for deep color and uncompressed 12-bit RGB video, essential for precision grading in DaVinci Resolve.

  • Rec. 2020 Support: Fully compatible with the wide color gamut requirements of HDR and Rec. 2020 workflows.

  • Massive Audio Ingest: Supports up to 64 channels of embedded audio via SDI in 4K and 8K modes, and up to 32 channels of embedded audio via HDMI 2.1.

Multi-Channel Flexibility

Using the free Blackmagic DeckLink SDK, the card can be reconfigured to behave as multiple independent devices.

  • 4-Channel Customization: The four SDI ports can be set to any combination of input or output. This allows the card to replace four separate capture cards, effectively acting like a DeckLink Duo 2 but with 12G-SDI bandwidth on every port.

  • Fill and Key Playback: Ideal for broadcast graphics, the card can output simultaneous "Fill" and "Key" signals for overlaying titles and animations onto a live production switcher feed.

Hardware and Installation

  • Interface: PCI Express 8-lane generation 3. It is compatible with 8 and 16-lane PCIe slots.

  • Mezzanine Design: The G2 utilizes a main PCIe card for SDI and a secondary "mezzanine" card for the HDMI 2.1 ports. This usually requires two physical slot openings in the computer chassis, though only the primary card uses a PCIe slot for data.

  • Deck Control: Includes an RS-422 port for controlling professional broadcast decks and VTRs directly from editing software.

  • Sync Input: Features a reference input for Tri-Sync or Black Burst to ensure the card is perfectly timed within a larger studio environment.

Operational Insight

The primary advantage of the DeckLink 8K Pro G2 is its ability to bridge the gap between high-end cinema equipment and the latest consumer 8K displays. For a color grading suite, it allows the artist to feed a professional 8K SDI reference monitor while simultaneously providing an 8K HDMI 2.1 feed for a client display. This eliminates the need for expensive 12G-SDI to HDMI 2.1 converters, which are often prone to latency or signal degradation.
