The Blackmagic Design Fairlight Console Channel Control is the high-density parameter module designed for modular Fairlight Studio Consoles. While the faders handle levels, this module provides the tactile interface for the "deep" processing in DaVinci Resolve, specifically for EQ, Dynamics, Panning, and Plug-ins.
It consists of 12 groups of touch-sensitive rotary encoders and corresponding buttons, allowing it to act as either a wide controller for 12 channels or a deep controller for a single selected track.
Operational Modes
The module is highly adaptive and changes its layout based on the task:
-
Single Channel Mode: All 12 encoder groups are mapped to one selected track. This allows you to see and adjust every band of EQ and every compressor setting simultaneously across the entire panel.
-
In-Line Mode: Each of the 12 encoder groups controls a single parameter (like Pan or Gain) for the 12 channels currently mapped to the faders below.
-
Master Mode: Maps parameters for the master bus and sub-mixes across the panel, following the signal chain from dynamics to final limiting.
Key Hardware Components
-
Rotary Encoders: 12 high-resolution, touch-sensitive knobs. Simply touching a knob can trigger automation "write" or reveal detailed parameter data on the console’s LCD monitors.
-
Function Buttons: Each encoder group is paired with buttons for functions like In (Bypass), Select, and Call.
-
Tally Indicators: Multi-color LEDs provide instant feedback on which processing blocks are active (e.g., Red for Dynamics, Magenta for EQ).
Maintenance and Common Issues
-
Encoder Calibration: If a knob feels "jumpy" or skips values, the internal optical sensor may need cleaning.
-
Touch Sensitivity Failure: If the module stops recognizing when a knob is touched, it usually points to a grounding issue between the module and the console frame.
-
Communication Errors: Since the module communicates via Ethernet, "offline" errors are often resolved by checking the network switch in the console base or verifying the IP address in the DaVinci Resolve Video and Audio I/O settings.
Installation and Power
-
Connectivity: Connects to the host workstation via a standard RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet port.
-
Power: Features an internal power supply with a standard IEC C14 input, allowing it to be powered directly from the console's internal power distribution.
-
Form Factor: Designed to "drop in" to the Fairlight Console Chassis and secure via underside mounting points.
Diagnostic Tip
If the module lights up but the knobs do not change parameters in DaVinci Resolve, verify that a track is Selected (SEL) on the Fader Module. The Channel Control module remains "dormant" until it has a specific track target to manipulate.
