The Blackmagic Design PYXIS 6K is a modular, box-style digital cinema camera that integrates the powerful 6K full-frame sensor from the Cinema Camera 6K into a versatile, industrial chassis. Designed to be "rigged up" for various production environments, it is available in three native lens mount versions: L-Mount, PL, and Locking EF.

Core Sensor Technology

  • 6K Full-Frame Sensor: Features a 36 x 24mm sensor with a native resolution of 6048 x 4032. This allows for a shallow depth of field and supports shooting in true 6:5 anamorphic without cropping.

  • Dual Native ISO: Features native ISOs of 400 and 3200, with a maximum ISO of 25,600, ensuring clean images in both bright sunlight and low-light environments.

  • 13 Stops of Dynamic Range: Preserves high levels of detail in the highlights and shadows for professional color grading in DaVinci Resolve.

  • Built-in OLPF: Includes a high-performance Optical Low Pass Filter specifically designed to match the sensor, significantly reducing moiré and aliasing.

Modular Chassis & Build

  • Customizable Side Plates: The camera body is made of CNC machined aerospace aluminum. It includes a standard plate with multiple 1/4" and 3/8" threads, but can be swapped for an SSD Plate or a Rosette Plate for mounting handles and accessories.

  • Built-in 4" HDR Monitor: A high-brightness 1500-nit touchscreen LCD (1920 x 1080) provides a detailed view for focus and framing, often eliminating the need for an external monitor in compact setups.

  • Recording Media: Features dual CFexpress Type B card slots for high-speed Blackmagic RAW recording and a USB-C expansion port for recording directly to external SSDs.

Connectivity & Workflow

  • Network & Streaming: Includes a 10G Ethernet port and built-in hardware streaming (RTMP/SRT) for direct broadcasting to platforms like YouTube or Twitch. It also supports mobile data tethering via USB-C for 4G/5G connections.

  • Cloud Integration: Simultaneously records H.264 proxies and original RAW files, which can be automatically uploaded to Blackmagic Cloud for immediate remote editing.

  • Professional I/O:

    • 12G-SDI Out: Supports monitoring up to 2160p60 with HDR and status overlays.

    • Audio: 1 x Mini XLR (with 48V phantom power), 3.5mm stereo input, and 3.5mm headphone jack.

    • Sync: Dedicated BNC connector for Reference and Timecode input.

Shooting Resolutions & Frame Rates

Resolution Aspect Ratio Max Frame Rate
6048 x 4032 3:2 (Open Gate) 36 fps
6048 x 2520 2.4:1 60 fps
4832 x 4032 6:5 (Anamorphic) 36 fps
4096 x 2160 17:9 (4K DCI) 60 fps
1920 x 1080 16:9 (HD) 120 fps

Operational Insight

The PYXIS 6K addresses the primary limitation of the "Pocket" series—its non-standard form factor. By moving to a box design, the PYXIS allows for more professional rigging solutions, better weight distribution on gimbals, and more efficient heat dissipation for long-form shooting. It uses Sony BP-U style batteries, which are widely used in the industry and provide significantly longer run times than the smaller NP-F style batteries found in previous compact models.
