Blackmagic Design PYXIS 6K EF

The Blackmagic Design PYXIS 6K EF is the electronic-mount version of the modular PYXIS box camera. While it shares the same high-performance internal hardware as the PL and L-Mount models, the EF version is specifically designed to leverage the massive ecosystem of Canon EF-mount lenses, offering full electronic control over focus and iris for both vintage and modern glass.

The Sensor: 6K Full-Frame

  • Active Sensor Size: 36mm x 24mm (Full Frame).

  • Native Resolution: 6048 x 4032.

  • Dual Native ISO: 400 and 3200 (expandable to 25,600), providing exceptional low-light performance and minimizing noise across the 13 stops of dynamic range.

  • Flexible Aspect Ratios: Supports shooting in 3:2 Open Gate, 6:5 Anamorphic, and standard 16:9 or 2.4:1 widescreen.

The EF Mount Advantage

The EF mount is one of the most versatile and widely available lens mounts in the world.

  • Active Electronics: Unlike the PL version, the EF mount features electronic pins that allow the camera to communicate with the lens. This provides active iris control and autofocus support (on compatible lenses) directly from the camera body or the DaVinci Resolve software.

  • Image Stabilization: Supports lens-based Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), which is critical for handheld or run-and-gun documentary shooting.

  • Lens Selection: Provides native compatibility with thousands of professional lenses, from affordable SLR glass to high-end Cine-EF primes, without requiring expensive adapters.

Technical Features

  • Recording Media: Dual CFexpress Type B card slots for high-speed Blackmagic RAW recording and "hot-swapping" during production.

  • Side Monitor: Includes a built-in 4-inch 1500-nit HDR touchscreen, optimized for outdoor use and menu navigation.

  • Streaming & Cloud: Features a built-in hardware streaming engine. It can stream via Ethernet or mobile data (USB-C to phone) and automatically syncs proxies to Blackmagic Cloud and Dropbox.

  • Audio I/O: Includes a professional Mini XLR input with 48V phantom power, a 3.5mm microphone input, and a built-in mono speaker for playback.

Operational Insight

The PYXIS 6K EF is the "workhorse" version of this camera line. It is particularly popular with independent filmmakers and corporate video producers who already own a library of EF glass. Because the EF mount is shorter than the PL mount, it is easier to rig into compact setups for gimbals. Furthermore, the electronic iris control makes it a superior choice for solo operators who need to make quick exposure adjustments via the camera's touchscreen or the physical scroll wheel on the side of the chassis.

Should we look at the L-Mount version next to see how it handles mirrorless lens technology?
