Blackmagic Design Spares - Camera CC - Sunshade

The Blackmagic Design Spares - Camera CC - Sunshade is the original, rubberized "pop-on" hood designed for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera (EF/MFT) and the Production Camera 4K.

Since these legacy cameras feature a high-gloss, 5-inch touchscreen that is notoriously difficult to see in direct sunlight, this sunshade was an essential accessory included in the original box. Over time, the rubber can become brittle, lose its shape, or the mounting tabs can tear.

Key Features

  • Material: Flexible, heavy-duty matte rubber (to prevent internal reflections).

  • Attachment Method: Friction-fit/Pressure-fit. It utilizes the recessed groove surrounding the 5-inch LCD screen.

  • Collapsible Design: The shade can be folded flat while still attached to the camera, allowing it to fit into a camera bag without removal.

When to Replace the Sunshade

  • "Sticky" Rubber: Like many rubberized products from the early 2010s, the original sunshades can undergo a chemical breakdown (hydrolysis), becoming unpleasantly sticky to the touch.

  • Torn Retention Tabs: If the thin rubber lip that grips the camera body tears, the shade will repeatedly fall off, especially in windy conditions.

  • Deformation: If stored improperly under heavy gear, the rubber can "set" in a warped position, partially blocking the view of the screen corners.

  • Loss: Since it is a friction-fit part with no locking screws, it is frequently lost on location.

Technical Installation & Care

Repair Level: 0 (No Tools Required).

  1. Cleaning the Groove: Before installing a new shade, use a wooden toothpick or a soft brush to clean the groove around the camera's LCD. Dust and grit accumulation here are the primary reasons sunshades slip off.

  2. Corner-First Application: Start by seating one of the top corners of the shade into the groove, then work your way across the top and down the sides.

  3. The "Rubbing Alcohol" Trick: If your old shade is just starting to get sticky, you can sometimes "save" it by rubbing it down thoroughly with 90% Isopropyl Alcohol and dusting it with a tiny amount of unscented talcum powder. If it's too far gone, a replacement is the only real fix.

Alternatives to the OEM Shade

If you find the original rubber shade too floppy or ineffective, many users transitioned to:

  • Hard-Sided Shades: Companies like Hoodman made specialized "Cinema Crane" style shades for this camera that offered a sturdier viewing tunnel.

  • The "Sun Hood" Cage: Many cages for the original Cinema Camera (like the vintage Wooden Camera or Tilta cages) had built-in threaded holes to mount more permanent, fabric-style sun hoods.

Expert Advice: If you are still using the original Cinema Camera, keep in mind that the screen is a resistive touchscreen (it responds to pressure, not just touch). If your sunshade is seated too tightly or is warped, it can occasionally press against the edge of the screen, causing "phantom touches" or making the menu unresponsive.

Are you looking for the original rubber spare, or has your current shade become sticky and unusable?
