The Blackmagic Design Spares - Camera URSA Mini - Right Side Panel PL is the primary structural and protective cover for the right-hand side (non-operator side) of the URSA Mini chassis. This specific "PL" version is designed to accommodate the physical dimensions and mounting points of the URSA Mini and URSA Mini Pro when configured with professional PL (Positive Lock) cinema mounts.
This panel is much more than a cosmetic shell; it is a vital part of the camera's thermal and electronic shielding:
Structural Integrity: Being made of magnesium alloy, it provides the rigid "exoskeleton" needed to support the weight of heavy cinema lenses and accessories attached to the top and bottom rails.
EMI Shielding: The internal side of the panel is typically treated or designed to act as a Faraday cage, protecting the internal Main PCB from electromagnetic interference (EMI) from wireless transmitters or nearby power sources.
Heat Dissipation: As part of the camera's chassis, the metal panel acts as a passive heat sink, helping to radiate heat away from the internal processing boards.
This panel is designed for the URSA Mini body style, including:
URSA Mini 4K / 4.6K (PL Models)
URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G1 / G2
URSA Mini Pro 12K
URSA Broadcast G2 (when utilizing the PL mount option)
While the magnesium chassis is incredibly durable, specific scenarios necessitate a replacement:
Impact Damage: A direct drop on the right side can dent or crack the panel. Because the chassis needs to be perfectly square for the lens mount to remain aligned, a warped panel can cause "flange" issues.
Stripped Accessory Threads: The right side often features mounting points for rosettes or accessory arms. If these threads are stripped out, the panel must be replaced to ensure equipment can be safely secured.
Resale/Refurbishment: In high-end rental environments, the right side of the camera often suffers "scuffing" from being rested on its side or rubbed against cages. Replacing the panel is a common way to restore a camera to Grade-A aesthetic condition.
Thermal Vent Damage: If the precision-milled vents are crushed or obstructed, it can interfere with the intake/exhaust of the internal cooling fans, leading to sensor overheating.
Genuine Magnesium Alloy: Provides the perfect balance of lightweight portability and extreme structural strength.
OEM Matte Finish: Matches the signature Blackmagic aesthetic, ensuring a seamless look after repair.
Pre-Drilled Precision: All screw holes and vent ports are CNC-machined to match the specific internal standoffs of the URSA Mini internal frame.
Replacing a side panel is a "Level 2" repair. It requires opening the camera, which may affect your warranty if not done by an authorized center.
Screw Organization: The URSA Mini uses multiple screw lengths. Do not mix them up. Putting a long screw into a short hole can puncture the internal battery management board or short-circuit the Main PCB.
Internal Cable Safety: When the panel is loosened, be extremely careful of the cables that may be routed near the edges. Ensure no wires are "pinched" when the new panel is tightened down.
Gasket Maintenance: Ensure the internal rubber seals or EMI gaskets are correctly seated before final assembly to maintain the camera's dust and moisture resistance.
Torque Pattern: Tighten the chassis screws in a "star" or "cross" pattern to ensure even pressure across the frame, which prevents the magnesium from warping.
Note: If you are using an EF-mount version of the camera, the "PL" panel is usually identical in fit, but always verify the specific part number to ensure the cutout for the lens release button or mount collar is correctly aligned.
Are you replacing this due to physical damage from a drop, or are you looking to refresh the look of a used camera?
