The Blackmagic Design Video Assist - Fan is the official replacement cooling component designed for the Video Assist series. As these monitor-recorders process high-bitrate video (such as ProRes and Blackmagic RAW) and power high-brightness screens, they generate significant heat. This internal fan is critical for maintaining a safe operating temperature and preventing thermal throttling or hardware damage.

Targeted Thermal Management

The Video Assist fan is a low-profile, high-efficiency brushless motor designed to move air quietly through the unit's internal heat sinks. By pulling heat away from the main processor (FPGA) and the high-brightness backlight, the fan ensures the device remains stable during long recording sessions or in high-ambient-temperature environments.

Symptoms of Fan Failure

If the internal fan becomes clogged with dust, develops a bearing issue, or fails entirely, you may notice the following:

  • Excessive Noise: A grinding, buzzing, or whining sound during operation.

  • Overheating Alerts: The unit displaying a temperature warning on the screen.

  • Sudden Shutdowns: The device powering off during a recording to protect the internal circuitry.

  • Touchscreen Glitches: Excessive heat can sometimes cause the touch digitizer to become unresponsive or behave erratically.

Compatibility and Design

While many Video Assist models look similar, the fan specifications (size, voltage, and connector type) can vary between the 3G, 12G HDR, and original 4K models.

  • Precision Connectors: The fan features a micro-plug that connects directly to the Main PCB, allowing the Blackmagic OS to monitor and regulate fan speed based on internal temperature sensors.

  • Compact Form Factor: Engineered to fit within the narrow tolerances of the magnesium alloy chassis without interfering with the LCD ribbon cables or battery plates.

Key Features

  • Genuine Blackmagic Spare: Ensures the correct airflow-to-noise ratio for professional film sets.

  • Variable Speed Control: Compatible with the device's internal thermal management system.

  • Durable Construction: Built to withstand the constant "on/off" cycles of production use.

  • Quiet Operation: Designed to minimize acoustic interference when the monitor is used near on-set microphones.

Technical Installation Note

Replacing the fan requires a partial teardown of the Video Assist unit.

  • Access: On most models, the fan is located behind the Main PCB or tucked near the top of the chassis.

  • Cleaning: When replacing a failed fan, it is highly recommended to use compressed air to clear any dust from the internal cooling fins of the heat sink to ensure the new fan can move air effectively.

  • Cable Routing: Ensure the small power wires for the fan are routed away from the hinges and screw holes to prevent pinching during reassembly.
