The Blackmagic Design Streaming Decoder 4K is a hardware decoding processor engineered to receive a high-quality H.264 or H.265 internet stream and convert it back into broadcast-grade 12G-SDI and HDMI video.

Replacing the legacy ATEM Streaming Bridge, this 4K unit provides a dedicated, highly stable point-to-point hardware link for remote broadcasting. It allows remote cameras or external production switchers to feed directly back into a central control studio over standard internet connections without needing a computer.

Key Workflows & Point-to-Point Links

1. Direct-from-Camera Streaming

Many Blackmagic cameras—such as the PYXIS, URSA Cine, URSA Broadcast G2, and Studio Camera Pro lines—feature built-in hardware streaming encoders. A camera operator in the field can stream directly from the camera via SRT or RTMP over the internet. The Streaming Decoder 4K sits back at the main studio control room, grabs that stream, and instantly converts it to a standard 12G-SDI feed to plug straight into a main production switcher.

2. Broadcaster Point-to-Point (Encoder-to-Decoder)

For cameras without built-in streaming, the unit pairs with its sibling, the Blackmagic Streaming Encoder 4K. You feed any traditional camera or switcher output into the hardware Encoder at Location A, transmit it across the internet via Secure Reliable Transport (SRT), and decode it securely with the Streaming Decoder 4K at Location B.

Core Broadcast Features

  • Built-in Tally, Talkback, and Camera Control: This is the most crucial upgrade over basic IP decoders. When connected to a 12G-SDI reference return feed from an ATEM switcher at the studio, the decoder can send camera control data, shading/color correction adjustments, talkback, and tally triggers back over the internet to the remote camera. The remote operator can see when they are live ("On Air") and talk directly to the director.

  • 4G & 5G Phone Tethering: Both the front and rear panels feature high-speed USB-C ports. If your venue's hardwired Ethernet network drops or becomes unstable, you can plug in a 4G or 5G smartphone. The unit will automatically failover to cellular mobile data to keep the broadcast from going offline.

  • Teranex Mini Form Factor: Built using Blackmagic’s popular 1/3-rack width chassis. You can mount three of these units side-by-side in a single standard 1RU rack shelf to decode three independent remote camera feeds simultaneously.

Technical Specifications Matrix

Feature Specification
Video Codec Decoding H.264 and H.265 (HEVC)
Supported Transport Protocols SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) and RTMP/RTMPS
Max Decoding Resolution Up to 4096 x 2160p at 60 fps (True 4K)
Physical Video Outputs 2x BNC (12G-SDI) and 1x HDMI 2.0
Physical Video Inputs 1x BNC (12G-SDI Reference Input for Tally/Control)
Embedded Audio Capacities 16-Channel SDI embedded; 8-Channel HDMI embedded
Network Interface 1x Gigabit RJ45 Ethernet (10/100/1000 BASE-T)
Local Status Monitoring Integrated 2.2-inch color LCD front display with control dial
Dual Power Redundancy 1x Internal 100-240V AC input AND 1x 4-pin XLR 12V DC input

Technical Monitoring Layout

When you connect the HDMI or secondary SDI monitor outputs to a local display, the device outputs a detailed technical graphics display dashboard. This includes:

  1. On Air Indicator: A large visual confirmation of live link status.

  2. Trend Graphs: Real-time data logging over the past 60 seconds showing data rate consistency and internal buffer cache fill. This helps diagnose if local internet speed drops below the required bit rate.

  3. Audio & Video History: Multi-segment audio meters with precise ballistics (VU or PPM formats) alongside a 6-second history timeline to check for transmission stuttering.
