Blackmagic Design URSA Cine EVF

The Blackmagic Design URSA Cine EVF is a high-performance electronic viewfinder specifically engineered for the URSA Cine and PYXIS 6K camera systems. It is designed to meet the demands of professional cinematographers, offering a high-resolution OLED display and specialized optical glass to ensure critical focus and accurate color representation in all lighting conditions.

Core Functionality

  • High-Resolution OLED Display: Features a 1920 x 1080 color OLED screen. The self-emissive nature of OLED technology provides true blacks and a high contrast ratio, which is vital for judging exposure in dark areas of the frame.

  • Precision Glass Optics: Built with a high-quality four-element glass diopter that includes an adjustable focus range of -4 to +3. This ensures a sharp image across the entire screen, even for operators who wear glasses.

  • Single Cable Connection: Unlike older EVFs that require separate power and SDI cables, this unit connects via a single high-speed USB-C style connector that carries video, power, tally, and camera control data.

Technical Features

  • Integrated Tally Light: Includes a large, built-in tally light on the front of the EVF. It illuminates red for program and green for preview, providing a clear signal to talent and crew during live or multi-camera productions.

  • Assignable Function Buttons: Features three physical, customizable buttons (labeled F1, F2, F3) that can be mapped to functions such as focus peaking, false color, or zebra, allowing for tactile control without taking your eye off the eyepiece.

  • Proximity Sensor: An internal sensor detects when the operator's eye is at the viewfinder, automatically turning on the OLED screen to save power and extend the life of the display when not in use.

  • Flexible Mounting: Designed to attach to the URSA Cine via a rugged mounting bracket that allows for tilting and swiveling. It is also compatible with the URSA Cine EVF Extension for studio or dolly configurations.

Operational Insight

The URSA Cine EVF is a significant upgrade over the original URSA Viewfinder. The transition to a digital USB-C interface allows for much lower latency and higher bit-depth video monitoring. For operators working in bright daylight, the EVF is superior to the camera’s fold-out LCD because the rubber eyecup completely seals out ambient light, allowing the operator to accurately evaluate the 12-bit RAW image.

Note: This EVF is designed specifically for the URSA Cine and PYXIS mounts. While it uses a USB-C style connector, it is a proprietary hardware interface and cannot be used as a generic monitor for laptops or other cameras.
