Blackmagic Design Videohub 40x40 12G

The Blackmagic Design Videohub 40x40 12G is a professional high-density video router designed for medium-to-large scale broadcast and production environments. It provides zero-latency routing for up to 40 inputs and 40 outputs in a compact 2RU chassis, supporting any combination of SD, HD, and Ultra HD video formats up to 2160p60 simultaneously.

Core Functionality

  • Zero-Latency Design: Unlike IP-based video solutions that introduce processing lag, this hardware crosspoint router provides instantaneous switching, making it essential for live broadcast and IMAG (Image Magnification) workflows.

  • Mixed Format Support: Every 12G-SDI connection is multi-rate. You can route a 1080i59.94 signal to one output and a 2160p60 signal to another at the same time without the router needing to be reset to a single project standard.

  • Visual Routing: The built-in 5-inch LCD (compared to the 2.2" on smaller models) displays live video of your sources alongside custom labels. This allows you to verify a source by eye before committing to a "take."

Technical Features

  • Advanced 12G-SDI: Supports high frame rate Ultra HD via a single BNC cable. It is fully compatible with 10-bit YUV 4:2:2 and even 12-bit RGB 4:4:4 (up to 2160p30), satisfying the color precision requirements of high-end feature film workflows.

  • Full SDI Re-clocking: Every 12G-SDI input features integrated re-clocking. This regenerates the signal to reduce jitter and signal loss, which is critical when receiving signals over long cable runs before redistributing them throughout a facility.

  • Mission-Critical Power: Equipped with dual internal 100-240V AC power supplies. If one power source or internal supply fails, the unit stays online without interruption.

  • Front Panel Controls: Includes a machined metal spin knob with an electronic clutch for scrolling through sources, along with a numeric keypad and shortcut buttons for rapid direct-entry routing.

Technical Specifications

Feature Specification
I/O Configuration 40 x 40 (12G-SDI BNC)
Max Resolution 2160p60 (Ultra HD / 4K DCI)
Reference I/O Tri-Sync or Black Burst (Input & Loop Output)
Control Interfaces 10/100/1000 Ethernet, USB-C (Setup/Updates), RS-422
Display 5-inch High-Resolution Color LCD
Power Consumption ~46.5 Watts
Form Factor 2RU (Full Rack Width)

Operational Insight

The Videohub 40x40 12G is often considered the "sweet spot" of the Videohub line. It offers enough I/O for a sophisticated multi-camera studio (e.g., 10 cameras, 10 recorders, and 20 monitoring stations) while remaining in a space-saving 2RU form factor.

The Ethernet Control Protocol allows it to be integrated into broader automation systems. Additionally, the Videohub Software Control for Mac, Windows, and iPad provides a "button-deck" style interface that is much more intuitive for non-technical operators to use compared to a traditional router panel.

How would you like to compare this to the larger 80x80 model or perhaps the smaller 20x20 version?
