The Blackmagic Design Videohub Smart Control Pro is a network-based hardware control panel designed for fast, "single-button" routing. Unlike the Master Control Pro, which uses a screen and a spin knob to navigate all possible crosspoints, the Smart Control Pro uses a cut-bus style interface where each button is pre-programmed to a specific source or destination.

Core Functionality

  • 48 Programmable Buttons: Each of the 48 RGB-backlit buttons can be configured to represent a single source or destination.

  • Two Operating Modes:

    • Cut-Bus Mode: The entire panel is set to one destination (e.g., "Main Monitor"). Pressing any button immediately switches that destination to a new source.

    • XY Mode: Users can assign specific buttons as "Destinations" and others as "Sources." You select the destination first (it flashes), then select the source to complete the route.

  • Macro Support: Up to 10 buttons can be assigned as Macros, allowing a single press to trigger multiple routing changes simultaneously (e.g., a "Show Start" macro that routes 5 cameras to 5 specific recorders at once).

Technical Features

  • Ethernet Connectivity: Connects to your network via RJ45. It can control any Videohub router on the same network, even if the router is in a different room or rack.

  • Power over Ethernet (PoE): Can be powered directly through the Ethernet cable if connected to a PoE switch, eliminating the need for a local power outlet. It also includes an internal AC power supply for standard IEC C13 cables.

  • RGB Backlighting: The buttons change color to indicate status. Generally, Green represents a destination, White represents a source, and Amber indicates a macro or a "Take" button.

  • "Take" Button Support: Can be configured to require a "Take" button press to confirm a route, preventing accidental switches during live broadcasts.

Technical Specifications

Feature Specification
Buttons 48 x Programmable RGB Buttons
Macros Up to 10 assignable
Interface RJ45 Ethernet (In & Out for looping)
Power 100-240V AC or PoE (Power over Ethernet)
Configuration USB-C via Blackmagic Videohub Setup software
Form Factor 1RU (less than 3 inches deep)
Reliability Power-fail protection (saves settings if power is lost)

Operational Insight

The Smart Control Pro is the preferred choice for individual workstations. For example, an editor might have one on their desk set to "Cut-Bus" mode for their dedicated grading monitor. They can instantly switch between "Camera 1," "Timeline," or "Scope" with one touch without navigating menus.

Comparison: Smart Control Pro vs. Master Control Pro

  • Smart Control Pro: Best for speed. Ideal for dedicated rooms where you only need access to a specific subset of sources. It does not have a screen.

  • Master Control Pro: Best for total access. Includes an LCD and a spin knob, allowing you to scroll through and route every single input and output on even the massive 80x80 router from a single panel.
